Signature songs are tricky creatures.

The artist is likely to grow weary of it, playing it rarely and then only after too much badgering to bear. They do it by rote, singing and playing only to be done and move along.

Thankfully, this is not always the case.

Just days after the fall elections of November 2006, Ani Difranco took to the stage in Boston. The alt-folksinger was incredibly happy, very pregnant — her first child would arrive two months later — and surrounded by fans who adored her. Her late in the set rendition of “32 Flavors” is a rich and easy affair, almost a lullaby. And when the audience joins in, something already good becomes something altogether better.
